DESCRIPTION

Teprotide is a nine-residue peptide inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) originally identified through research on bradykinin-potentiating peptides from Bothrops jararaca venom.

Also known as BPP-9a or SQ 20,881, Teprotide occupies an important position in the history of ACE inhibitor pharmacology and remains a useful reference peptide for studying metallopeptidase inhibition and peptide structure–activity relationships.

Peptide ACE Inhibition

ACE is a zinc metallopeptidase that participates in both Angiotensin I conversion and bradykinin degradation. Teprotide inhibits this enzyme and therefore provides a peptide-based tool for examining both catalytic functions.

Its proline-rich sequence and N-terminal pyroglutamate distinguish it structurally from short ACE substrates and from later small-molecule ACE inhibitors.

Teprotide was one of the early peptide inhibitors used to demonstrate that pharmacological blockade of ACE could produce substantial biological effects.
