DESCRIPTION

Human calcitonin is a 32-residue peptide hormone and endogenous ligand of the calcitonin receptor (CALCR). The mature sequence contains an intramolecular disulfide bond between Cys1 and Cys7 and terminates in Pro-NH₂, two structural features characteristic of biologically active calcitonin.

As the native human sequence, this peptide provides a useful reference ligand for studies of calcitonin receptor pharmacology, peptide structure–function relationships, osteoclast biology and species-dependent receptor responses.

Native Human Calcitonin Architecture

The N-terminal Cys1-Cys7 disulfide creates a short constrained ring, followed by a more flexible central and C-terminal region. The C-terminal prolinamide is also part of the mature molecular identity.
