Z-D-Ser-OH is N-Cbz-protected D-serine. The amino group is masked with benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz/Z), while the serine side-chain hydroxyl and carboxyl group remain unprotected and available for downstream chemistry.
The defined D configuration is the principal differentiator from conventional L-serine reagents. It enables stereochemical controls, D-residue peptide design, and synthetic routes in which the serine hydroxyl is intentionally left available for functionalization.

D-Serine Stereochemistry
Using an isolated D residue allows direct control over backbone stereochemistry rather than introducing a racemic precursor. Related stereochemical building blocks are available in the D-amino acid collection.
In peptide and peptidomimetic design, a D residue can alter local conformation, proteolytic susceptibility, and recognition. Those effects remain sequence dependent and should be evaluated experimentally.
Cbz Protection with a Free Hydroxyl
The Z group protects the α-amino function, but the serine side-chain hydroxyl is not masked. That free OH can be an advantage for derivatization, ether/ester formation, or routes where hydroxyl chemistry is intentional; it can also require protection if the planned reagents are not selective.
The free carboxyl group makes the material suitable for activation or conversion into additional protected intermediates.
Selection Versus Fmoc-Ser Derivatives
Z-D-Ser-OH is most useful when Cbz chemistry or a solution-phase route is preferred. It is not a direct substitute for an Fmoc-protected, side-chain-protected serine used in routine automated Fmoc-SPPS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Z-D-Ser-OH D-serine or L-serine?
It is the D stereoisomer of serine, protected on the amino group with Cbz.
Is the serine hydroxyl protected?
No. The side-chain hydroxyl remains free in Z-D-Ser-OH.
What is the role of the Z group?
Z (Cbz) protects the amino group and provides a different deprotection profile from Fmoc or Boc chemistry.
