H-2-Me-DL-Ser-OH is racemic α-methylserine, a serine analog in which the α-carbon carries an additional methyl group. The product retains the free amino, carboxyl, and side-chain hydroxyl functions.
α-Methyl substitution removes the conventional α-hydrogen and increases substitution around the backbone center. The DL material is therefore useful for exploratory chemistry in which both stereoisomers are acceptable or intentionally present.

α-Methylation and Conformational Effects
Adding a methyl group at the α-carbon can reduce backbone conformational freedom and increase steric demand during derivatization or peptide coupling. These effects are why α-methyl amino acids are frequently investigated in constrained peptide and peptidomimetic design.
The side-chain hydroxyl remains a separate reactive handle and can require protection depending on the reaction sequence.
Racemate Versus Defined D-Isomer
The DL product contains both enantiomers. It is useful for discovery-stage synthesis, analytical method development, or routes where stereochemical resolution is not yet required.
When a defined D stereoisomer is needed, the corresponding H-2-Me-D-Ser-OH product and other D-form amino acids provide more controlled stereochemistry.
Synthetic Planning
Because the molecule is supplied without N- or O-protection, direct incorporation into a protected peptide route normally requires an appropriate protection strategy first. For procurement, CAS 5424-29-3 helps distinguish the racemate from stereodefined α-methylserine products.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is H-2-Me-DL-Ser-OH racemic?
Yes. DL indicates a mixture of the two enantiomers.
How does α-methylserine differ from serine?
It has an additional methyl substituent at the α-carbon, increasing steric substitution and reducing conventional backbone flexibility.
Is the hydroxyl group protected?
No. The serine-like side-chain hydroxyl is free.
