Fmoc-D-Cys(Trt)-OH is an Fmoc-protected D-cysteine derivative in which the thiol side chain is protected by trityl (Trt). Trt limits premature oxidation and undesired sulfur chemistry during chain assembly and is removed under acidic final-cleavage conditions.
This Alan Scientific SKU is additionally designated “Animal-Derived.” That designation describes source or manufacturing provenance, not a different chemical structure: the CAS number, formula and molecular weight correspond to standard Fmoc-D-Cys(Trt)-OH. Laboratories with animal-origin restrictions should therefore review lot-specific origin documentation in addition to the chemical COA and MSDS.

Application Scope and Assay Relevance
Primary use: D-cysteine building block for disulfide-containing, cyclic or thiol-functional peptides. The protected Fmoc/Trt reagent is a synthesis intermediate, not a direct assay article.
| Typical in vitro relevance | Downstream applications include oxidative folding, disulfide mapping, thiol conjugation, redox/stability studies and binding or functional assays on the correctly folded peptide. D-Cys is especially useful when stereochemistry or disulfide geometry is part of the design question. |
| In vivo relevance | Disulfide- or cyclic D-Cys-containing peptides can be evaluated in animal studies when the final peptide has defined connectivity, purity and biological activity. Lot-specific animal-origin documentation remains a separate procurement issue from assay use. |
Chemical identity and animal-origin status are separate checks
CAS 167015-11-4 establishes the protected D-cysteine chemical identity, but it does not establish whether a particular lot is animal-derived. Origin claims should be supported by supplier or lot-specific provenance documentation.
Purchasing and QC Considerations
For disulfide projects, verify D-configuration, Trt protection, chemical purity and chiral purity. If animal-origin status matters to your institution, request the applicable origin statement or supporting supplier documentation for the lot.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Trt protect?
Trt protects the D-cysteine thiol group.
Can this building block be used for disulfide peptides?
Yes. After Trt removal, the free thiol can participate in controlled disulfide formation.
Does CAS 167015-11-4 prove animal-derived origin?
No. CAS identifies the chemical; animal-origin status is a separate provenance attribute that requires lot-specific documentation.
