DESCRIPTION

Magainin 2 is a 23 - amino - acid antimicrobial peptide discovered in the skin secretions of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. It has an amphipathic α - helical structure, which enables it to target and disrupt the membranes of a wide range of pathogens. This peptide exhibits potent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Magainin 2 binds to the negatively charged components of microbial membranes, inserts itself into the lipid bilayer, and forms pores. These pores cause the leakage of essential intracellular substances, leading to the death of the invading microorganisms. In the field of research, Magainin 2 is a key molecule for studying the structure - function relationships of antimicrobial peptides.
