DESCRIPTION

Magainin 1 is a 23 - amino - acid antimicrobial peptide originally isolated from the skin of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). It has an amphipathic structure with a helical conformation that allows it to interact with and disrupt the membranes of various pathogens. Magainin 1 shows broad - spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and some enveloped viruses. It works by inserting into the lipid bilayer of the target cell membrane, creating pores that lead to the leakage of intracellular contents and ultimately cell death.
