Cecropin B is a natural antimicrobial peptide closely related to Cecropin A, initially isolated from the hemolymph of the giant silk moth, Hyalophora cecropia. Composed of approximately 39 amino acids, it shares a similar amphipathic α - helix structure. This structure enables Cecropin B to effectively target bacterial cell membranes. It binds to the negatively charged regions of the membrane and inserts itself, disrupting the membrane integrity and forming pores. As a result, essential intracellular components leak out, leading to bacterial cell death. Similar to Cecropin A, it exhibits broad - spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram - positive and Gram - negative bacteria. In pharmacological research, Cecropin B is a valuable subject for studying membrane - active peptides and developing innovative antibacterial therapies, especially in the context of rising antibiotic resistance.
