Home Product Unusual Amino Acids & Analogs H-Lys(Z)-OH

DESCRIPTION

H-Lys(Z)-OH is Nε-Cbz-L-lysine. The lysine side-chain ε-amino group is protected with benzyloxycarbonyl (Z/Cbz), while the α-amino group and α-carboxyl group remain free.

This protection pattern is valuable in routes that need to manipulate or acylate the α-amino function while suppressing reaction at the lysine side chain. It is different from Nα-Cbz-Lys derivatives and from Fmoc-Lys(Z)-OH, where the α-amino group is also protected.

Product Information

Primary Research UseOrthogonally protected lysine intermediate for solution-phase and specialty peptide chemistry

Side-Chain-Selective Lysine Protection

Protecting Nε helps prevent side-chain acylation or branching during transformations at Nα. After the desired Nα chemistry is complete, the Cbz-protected side chain can be handled according to the overall deprotection strategy.

The free carboxyl group also allows esterification, activation, or fragment coupling in solution-phase synthesis.

How H-Lys(Z)-OH Differs from Fmoc-Lys Derivatives

H-Lys(Z)-OH has a free α-amino group. In routine Fmoc-SPPS, a reagent with Nα-Fmoc protection is usually more directly chain compatible.

For alternative lysine protection patterns and orthogonal handles, compare specialty peptide building blocks.

Procurement Identity

The positional designation Nε-Cbz should be stated in technical documentation because “Cbz-Lys” can otherwise be ambiguous. CAS 1155-64-2, formula, and lot-specific analytics support exact identification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lysine amino group is Cbz-protected?

The side-chain ε-amino group is Cbz-protected; the α-amino group remains free.

Is H-Lys(Z)-OH an Fmoc-SPPS building block?

Not in the standard sense because Nα is not Fmoc-protected. It is more naturally used as a solution-phase intermediate or precursor.

What does Z mean?

Z is a common abbreviation for the benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz) protecting group.
