DESCRIPTION

[Gln22]-β-Amyloid (1-40) is a synthetic peptide variant of the amyloid β (Aβ) protein, featuring a glutamine (Gln) substitution at the 22nd amino acid position (native Aβ(1-40) contains glutamate, Glu, at this site). This modification alters the peptide’s charge and hydrogen-bonding properties, potentially influencing its aggregation behavior, fibril formation, and interaction with cellular receptors or other molecules. Aβ(1-40) is a key component of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease, and the Gln22 variant is used in research to investigate how amino acid substitutions at critical sites affect Aβ’s propensity to aggregate, its neurotoxic potential, and its role in pathological pathways. By studying this variant, scientists aim to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying amyloidosis, evaluate the impact of genetic or post-translational modifications on Aβ biology, and develop therapeutic strategies targeting Aβ misfolding and plaque formation in Alzheimer’s and related disorders.
