Fmoc-alpha-Me-Orn(Boc)-OH: identity and synthesis considerations
Fmoc-alpha-Me-Orn(Boc)-OH has an Fmoc-protected alpha-amino group, a Boc-protected ornithine side-chain amino group and a free carboxylic acid. Alpha-Me identifies methyl substitution at the alpha carbon, not nitrogen methylation.

Two amino groups
The alpha-amino group enters backbone assembly after Fmoc removal. The three-methylene ornithine side chain terminates in a Boc-protected amine that can be revealed later for controlled functionalization.
Alpha methylation
The alpha-methyl substituent changes steric demand around peptide-bond formation. Monitor incorporation and subsequent extension independently; alpha methylation alone does not establish a particular fold, stability or activity.
Ornithine and lysine
Fmoc-alpha-Me-Lys(Boc)-OH has one additional side-chain methylene group. Use the actual terminal-amine spacing when selecting a residue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the methyl group on nitrogen?
No. It is bonded to the alpha carbon.
Which amine has Boc protection?
The terminal ornithine side-chain amine.
Is it interchangeable with alpha-methyllysine?
No. Ornithine has one fewer side-chain methylene group.
