DESCRIPTION

Eptifibatide is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide (seven amino acids) that acts as a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation by selectively binding to the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GPIIb/IIIa) receptor on activated platelets. This receptor is essential for the final step of platelet aggregation, where fibrinogen bridges adjacent platelets through GPIIb/IIIa. By blocking this interaction, Eptifibatide prevents thrombus formation, making it critical in managing acute coronary syndromes (ACS), including unstable angina and myocardial infarction, as well as during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Clinically, it is administered intravenously to reduce the risk of thrombotic complications in high-risk patients. In pharmacological research, Eptifibatide serves as a tool to investigate platelet signaling pathways, receptor-ligand interactions, and the development of anti-thrombotic therapies. Its design, based on a disintegrin-like sequence from the viper venom echistatin, highlights its role in translating natural product insights into clinical antiplatelet agents, underscoring its significance in cardiovascular medicine and thrombosis research.
