DESCRIPTION

Angiotensin A is a decapeptide (10 amino acids) and a key intermediate in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), generated by renin-mediated cleavage of angiotensinogen. It serves as the precursor to the potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II, formed via enzymatic hydrolysis by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin A binds to angiotensin receptors with lower affinity than angiotensin II but contributes to blood pressure regulation, fluid balance, and vascular tone through its conversion to the active octapeptide. In pharmacological research, it acts as a tool to investigate RAS signaling pathways, ACE substrate specificity, and the development of ACE inhibitors for treating hypertension and heart failure. Its role as a critical biosynthetic intermediate underscores its importance in understanding the cascade of events governing cardiovascular homeostasis and RAS-related disorders.
