DESCRIPTION

β-Amyloid (1-49) is a 49-amino acid peptide derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP), representing the full-length product of γ-secretase cleavage at the C-terminal end of the β-amyloid (Aβ) sequence. Longer than the more commonly studied Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42), this variant includes an extended C-terminal hydrophobic region that influences its aggregation properties and interaction with cellular processing enzymes. While Aβ(1-49) is less prone to forming toxic fibrils compared to shorter Aβ peptides, it serves as a key precursor in the sequential proteolytic processing of APP, being further cleaved by γ-secretase to generate shorter, more aggregation-prone fragments like Aβ(1-42). In research, β-Amyloid (1-49) is used to study the mechanisms of APP processing, γ-secretase specificity, and the early stages of Aβ aggregation, providing insights into the biogenesis of neurotoxic Aβ species involved in Alzheimer’s disease. Its role as an intermediate in the amyloid cascade highlights its importance in understanding the dynamic regulation of Aβ production and the structural basis for pathological fibril formation.
