DESCRIPTION

α-Conotoxin MI is a neurotoxic peptide isolated from the venom of the cone snail Conus miles, specifically targeting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Composed of 13 amino acids stabilized by three disulfide bridges, this peptide acts as a competitive antagonist, binding to the ligand-binding sites of neuronal and muscle-type nAChR subtypes to block acetylcholine-mediated receptor activation. By disrupting cholinergic signaling, α-Conotoxin MI inhibits neuromuscular transmission and neuronal communication, playing a critical role in the snail’s predatory mechanism. In research, it serves as a valuable tool to dissect the structural and functional properties of nAChRs, particularly in elucidating receptor subtypes involved in pain regulation, muscle function, and neurological disorders. Its high specificity and affinity for nAChRs make it a promising lead for developing therapeutic agents targeting nAChR-related conditions, such as chronic pain or Alzheimer’s disease, while highlighting the evolutionary sophistication of venom peptides in achieving precise molecular targeting.
