DESCRIPTION

Substance P (2-11), also called Deca Substance P or des-Arg Substance P, has the sequence Pro-Lys-Pro-Gln-Gln-Phe-Phe-Gly-Leu-Met-NH2. It differs from native Substance P only by removal of the N-terminal Arg1 residue.

This single-residue truncation changes net charge and removes the free N-terminal guanidinium-containing residue while preserving the remaining tachykinin sequence. SP(2-11) is therefore a useful close structural control for examining how Arg1 contributes to NK1 recognition, peptide conformation and transport.

Removing Arg1 Changes N-Terminal Charge

Arg1 contributes a strongly basic guanidinium side chain to native Substance P. Its removal changes the electrostatic character of the peptide without disrupting the remaining ten-residue sequence.

This makes SP(2-11) more informative than a heavily modified analog when the specific experimental question concerns the role of the first residue.

Research Applications

Substance P (2-11) can support NK1 receptor studies, N-terminal truncation SAR, peptide conformation research and comparisons of native versus des-Arg Substance P.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is SP(2-11) called des-Arg Substance P?

It lacks the N-terminal Arg1 residue.

Is the rest of the sequence unchanged?

Yes. Residues 2–11 retain the native Substance P sequence and amidated C-terminus.

Does it contain Met11?

Yes.

Research Use Only.
