DESCRIPTION

HIV-1 tat Protein (49 - 57) is a 9 - amino acid peptide fragment within the HIV-1 trans - activator of transcription (tat) protein. This highly basic region, rich in arginine residues, is a critical part of the arginine - rich motif (ARM). It binds specifically to the trans - activation response (TAR) RNA element located at the 5’ - end of all nascent HIV-1 transcripts. This binding event is essential for recruiting positive transcription elongation factor b (P - TEFb), composed of cyclin T1 and CDK9. Once bound, P - TEFb phosphorylates the carboxy - terminal domain of RNA polymerase II, enabling efficient transition from transcriptional initiation to elongation. In research, this peptide is used to study the intricate process of HIV-1 gene expression.
